Contrary to popular belief, even though UIC does not have a football team, we do have Spirit Week! And while UIC may not be known as “most spirited school,” our Student Alumni Ambassadors, along with other UIC organizations, work hard to put together fun events for UIC students to enjoy Spirit Week.
On Monday, February 18th, from 2-6pm in Student Center East, there is a “Paint the Windows” contest between UIC registered organizations. UIC organizations work to create the most creative and spirited window in order to win the contest. UIC senior and member of the UIC Cigar Club, Gavin Quinn, said he enjoyed the activities for UIC Spirit Week and the unique opportunities for the student organizations. “It was a lot of fun and in the end showed how many organizations and opportunities are available at UIC,” Quinn said via email. “Each window was painted by a dedicated group of students who do more than just show up for class.”
On Wednesday, February 20th, if you care about funding for UIC, come write a letter to Illinois legislators urging them to keep/increase funding. The Illinois Connection will have a table set up in the Bookstore from 11 A.M. – 3 P.M. And, of course, the $5 T-shirt sale, everyone’s favorite Spirit Week event, starts at noon.
On Thursday, February 21st, Comedy Sportz is once again coming to UIC to grant us all some laughs during stressful times. The show starts at 5:30pm in the Montgomery Ward Lounge in Student Center East, and get full fast, so come early!
And if you’ve ever wanted to participate in “Hustle up the Hancock,” but felt too intimidated by the 92 (full climb) or 52 (half climb) flights, UIC has an even easier option – Hustle up UH! Students, alumni, faculty, and staff can come to UH at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 23rd to register and run up the 28 flights of UIC’s tallest building!
Provided you can still walk after that, come see the Men’s Basketball team take on Bradley at 3:00 P.M. at the UIC Pavilion, and watch the Lighting of the Flame ceremony! Student Alumni Ambassadors will also have a poster-making table to support the Flames at the game!
If you’re looking to have as much fun as the UIC Pep Band does singing spirit songs at the Basketball games (you know they’re always SUPER excited), but are worried about what people think, just remember the words of UIC Pep Band director Nick Carlson: “It’s only weird if nobody does it.” Truer words have never been spoken.
